On Friday, August 22nd, 2008, UNH IT Pipeline, The UNH Student Computing Resource, will be shifting to a new web address. The new format incorporates more social networking applications and allows readers to share and create content regarding the UNH Student IT experience. No need to remember a new web address, as the current web site will redirect visitors to the new address. The format includes a new RSS feed, which can be found here.

Some wireless access points include the Memorial Union Building, Dimond Library, Whittemore Center, and Holloway Commons. On occasion, Windows machines in the Computing Clusters experience a login failure due to non-synchronized passwords. If this occurs, students must synchronize their CISUNIX password to match that of the Wildcat domain. If users still experience additional errors after successfully logging into a cluster machine, they should reset the Single Sign-On Password from within MyUNH Blackboard. In addition to Dimond Academic Commons IT Support Center (located on Level 3), each public computing cluster has student consultants available to assist with any synchronization issues.

Beginning October 1, 2007, folks connecting remotely to UNH Network resources (such as AD/Wildcat and exchange) will be required to use the new UNH Web Virtual Private Network (VPN), instead of the Nortel Contivity VPN Client. Are you dreading the long lines to buy books? The UNH Bookstore offers an alternative. Order your books online and pick them up when you arrive on campus. It’s as easy as that.
To order your books online you will need to know your course schedule. Simply knowing the names of the courses you are taking will not be sufficient. Students will need to know the Department (ENGL) Course (401) and Section (03) for each class. This information can be found on the printable and detailed schedules. To get all the information you need, please follow these steps:

Log into Blackboard
Go to the Webcat/Student Services tab

Click Continue under Webcat

Go to Student Services and Financial Aid

Click on Registration

Choose either Printable Schedule or Detailed Schedule

To order books online go to: unh.bncollege.com

The bookstore can be reached at 603.862.2140 for any further questions regarding the ordering of books.

In recognition, CIS will partner with multiple UNH groups and external speakers to present a focused series of programs and events. The theme of "Safe Computing Doesn’t Happen by Accident" will be the central point of discussion for the series, which will feature expert speaker presentations, a Safe Computing Fair in the MUB, and a Safe Computing @UNH class. CIS will send E-mail expiration notices to all users affected two weeks prior to removal. The notice will also include instructions on how to forward UNH E-mail to another account. 'Authorize Payer' access is changing - give your parents new and improved access with a MyUNH/Blackboard Parent Portal account. Beginning Monday, April 23rd, you can authorize anyone you want to access your UNH billing information -- your parents, a family member, or a friend. You’re completely in charge of who has access, and you can change that access at any time. Just set up an account and that person will be able to login to MyUNH/Blackboard and view your up-to-the-minute billing information. The new service takes the place of the 'authorized payer' service and is optional. More

Recently, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) was reported to be reaching a settlement with 50 Ohio University students that asked them to pay $3,000 each to avoid Internet piracy lawsuits. As part of its ongoing copyright crackdown, the RIAA has already sued about 18,000 computer users nationwide since September 2003. The figure includes 1,062 computer users at 130 universities. Currently, UNH students are receiving similar letters from the RIAA, in advance of legal action. More

Modifying your MyUNH homepage is simple. The following instructions explain how to reorganize your modules within Blackboard to create a new look and feel, using the Computing @ UNH module as an example: 1. Log into Blackboard (http://blackboard.unh.edu) 2. Select Modify Layout 3. Under the Customize Page Layout section, highlight UNH - Computing@ UNH for Students in column 1. 4. Use the Move Up arrow to relocate this module to the top of MyUNH. 5. Click Submit. 6. Click OK. 7. That's it! Follow the same instructions to re-order the modules in column 2.

How to Make Free Long-Distance Phone Calls Using Your PAC

If you live on-campus, you may use your Telecom Personal Authorization Code (PAC) to make long-distance calls. Your PAC is now distributed to you through MyUNH Blackboard. Follow these instructions to obtain your PAC: Login to Blackboard.unh.edu Click the Webcat/Student Services tab Click the Continue button in the UNH - Telecom Online module Enter your Username and Password Click on the link to obtain your Personal Authorization Code Students using their PAC receive 100 FREE minutes each month (August - May) to make calls anywhere within the 48 continental states. Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) Violations

Make no mistake. The recording industries are listening. Contrary to popular belief, UNH has been host to a vast number of complaints from various recording companies. UNH students have managed to avoid any public brawls with the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) involving great sums of money. And though you may not be aware of students being brought to court to defend DMCA violations, UNH is contacted by companies such as Sony, Paramount and DreamWorks on a daily basis.
Some residents are under the assumption that programs such as DC++, Limewire and Ares are OK to use since no one is getting caught. It is important for residents to realize that people are indeed being caught and that the University does not support the use of such software. For those who are unaware of the process, here is how it works: John Doe, a resident at UNH, has Limewire installed on his computer. He downloads and shares a recent blockbuster movie or chart-topping single. While he is sharing the music, movie, videogame or other copyrighted material, the company that owns the material is searching for anyone who is sharing the file. As soon as the company detects that John Doe is freely sharing their legally protected material they take down his IP address. The IP address shows that John Doe is sharing the file from a UNH residence hall.
As the internet service provider for residents, UNH is the contact for the RIAA. UNH gets the official message from the RIAA and companies that own copyrighted works saying that John Doe is sharing a specific file. They demand that the file be removed or they will take legal action. When UNH's Network Security gets the message they call John Doe in his dorm room. They inform him of the violation. If John is not there they leave a message. From this point on, John has three days to delete the file and get back in contact with the Help Desk (862.4242) and confirm that the file is gone. If John does not get back in touch after three days, weekends included, John's internet connection is blocked. John will not be able to get his connection back until he contacts the Help Desk and removes the file. In addition, many residents believe that DC++ is in some way affiliated with the University of New Hampshire. It should be understood that UNH in no way supports, runs or condones any DC++ activity. DC++ is an “underground” student-run filesharing program.

Internet Explorer 7 Not Supported by Blackboard

CIS staff advises caution to students who install Internet Explorer 7. On November 14, 2006, Microsoft will include Internet Explorer 7 (IE7) as part of its automatic updates. Since Blackboard® does not yet support IE7, CIS (Computing & Information Services) can not support its use at this time. Blocking the installation of IE7 is simple. To download the Auto-Install Block Utility or to view instructions for uninstalling IE7, visit http://www.unh.edu/ie7utility. Apple Announces New Battery Recall for MacBook Pro

Apple Computers has discovered that some batteries for the 15-inch MacBook Pro are not performing well and are offering a free-of-charge battery exchange for models sold from February 2006 through May 2006. To find out if your computer is afected, please visit,(http://support.apple.com/macbookpro15/batteryexchange/index.html). There are no other models affected by this battery recall. The website is complete with instructions on how to identify your battery, and what to do next if your battery is potentially defective. According to the Apple website "...the affected batteries do not pose a safety risk. You may continue to use your current battery until a replacement arrives."
