Anti-virus software is made available to students by the University for both PC and Mac users. PC users are offered McAfee VirusScan Enterprise. If you bought your computer and it came with a free trial of McAfee, note that the Enterprise version is entirely different. The VirusScan Enterprise version is much more sleek and much less of a resource hog than retail and trial versions of McAfee. Mac users are offered ClamXav, which is an open source anti-virus program. ClamXav operates a little differently from the standard PC anti-virus software. Scans will only run when you start them. They will not run automatically and unlike other anti-virus programs, ClamXav will not scan files as you open them. Visit virus.unh.edu to learn more. For support with both McAfee and ClamXav, visit the IT Support Center in Dimond Library or call the CIS Help Desk at (603) 862-4242.
I’m a DJ and an avid Ipod user, so I was very excited when Apple finally released their long-awaited new audio accessories. Apple’s In-Ear Headphones contain two speakers within each earpiece – a tweeter for the high end and a woofer for the lower end ‘bass’ frequencies. The package also includes three various sized earpieces to allow the headphones a custom-fit each time. There is also a remote control device half way down the connecting wire. The remote controls volume, pause/play, and fast forward of each track. The remote is only functional with the recent generations of Apple playback devices, including iPod Touch, Nano, and iPhone. For more information, visit Apple or the UNH Computer store.
An apple a day, keeps the doctor away, but an Apple a week can help you stay afloat of the many academic uses of the Apple computer.
As a new student contributor of UNH IT Pipeline, I will be authoring a weekly column about Apple Computers and how they can improve college life. Just because Macs are known for Graphic Arts and Multimedia, doesn’t mean they’re not great in academic areas.
A new Apple-A-Week column will debut each Friday.
