Microsoft Windows 7 Demo November 4

Microsoft released Windows 7 in late October 2009. Windows 7 is not an upgrade to Vista, but an entirely new operating system. On Wednesday, November 4 from 1:00 to 2:30 PM, UNH IT will host a Microsoft Windows 7 demo in MUB 338. Microsoft’s Matt Hickey will be on hand to demonstrate new improvements and features of Windows 7, such as the improved taskbar, jump lists, DirectAccess, enhanced security and control, bitlocker to go, and more.

UPDATE: The Windows 7 demo was a great success! Thanks to all in attendance for stopping by and checking out the new design of Windows 7 . In case you missed it, here’s the PowerPoint shown at the event.

Anti-Virus Protection available for PCs and Macs

photo_6563_20090525By Dan VanderClock, UNH Senior

Anti-virus software is made available to students by the University for both PC and Mac users.  PC users are offered McAfee VirusScan Enterprise. If you bought your computer and it came with a free trial of McAfee, note that the Enterprise version is entirely different. The VirusScan Enterprise version is much more sleek and much less of a resource hog than retail and trial versions of McAfee.  Mac users are offered ClamXav, which is an open source anti-virus program. ClamXav operates a little differently from the standard PC anti-virus software. Scans will only run when you start them. They will not run automatically and unlike other anti-virus programs, ClamXav will not scan files as you open them.  Visit virus.unh.edu to learn more. For support with both McAfee and ClamXav, visit the IT Support Center in Dimond Library or call the CIS Help Desk at (603) 862-4242.

Protect Your Mac

Macbook Pro with Windows XPMany Mac users believe that it is not necessary to have virus protection for their computer, but if the Mac is running Windows Vista or XP, virus protection must be installed on the Windows side. Whether using Windows through a virtual machine, like Parallels, VM Ware Fusion, or if utilizing Windows through BootCamp, it still must be protected. For all UNH students, faculty, and staff, please visit http://virus.unh.edu to download McAfee VirusScan Enterprise. If you need assistance with virus protection, please call the CIS Help Desk at (603) 862-4242 or visit the Dimond Academic Commons IT Support Center.
