Students who are new to UNH this fall (freshmen and transfers) have had their default Blackboard E-mail address automatically set to match their official UNH E-mail address. All Blackboard courses and organizations will send mail to this address. Blackboard users can find and modify their default Blackboard E-mail address by logging into Blackboard and selecting the Personal Information link inside the Tools box, located to the left of the MyUNH tab.

UNH E-mail is only available while students are actively enrolled at UNH. If you leave UNH for any reason (graduation, leave of absence, etc.), your student E-mail account will be deleted approximately 4 months after you leave UNH. For students leaving UNH, take these steps to avoid losing any E-mail messages or files:
1. Set up an Alumni E-mail Address by filling out the online application form. This will give you a permanent your.name@alumni.unh.edu E-mail address. This forwards E-mail to any Internet account. You can keep this alias as long as you want, changing the account which it forwards to as you establish different E-mail accounts. This address is good to use for job or school applications as well as personal correspondence.
2. Download your address book information from UNH E-mail / CIS Unix WebMail. Any contacts stored in these accounts will be lost once the account is deleted. To export your contacts:
a. Login to your UNH E-mail.
b. Open the Organizing area on the left and expand the Address Book.
c. Select My Addresses on the left. Your list of contacts should appear in the main pane.
d. Check the box next to the contacts you want to export. Check the box at the top of the list to select all contacts.
e. Choose Export in the action menu above the list of names.
f. Choose the settings you want and click Export to save your contacts.
3. Set up System Forwarding on your UNH E-mail / CIS Unix WebMail account. Once you start system forwarding, no new messages will be delivered to your CIS Unix E-mail account. Incoming messages will bounce to the account you specify instead of into your CIS Unix E-mail box. This System Forward will remain in effect for 2 years after the account is deleted.
Tip: You may want to send a test message to your UNH E-mail account to verify that it is delivered to your non-UNH address.
4. Download all E-mail to your desktop. You can use a POP3 E-mail client to download all your existing UNH E-mail / CIS Unix WebMail onto your own computer. Examples of E-mail clients include Thunderbird, Mac Mail, Outlook Express, or Windows Mail.
Once the client is installed on your machine, setup an E-mail account using cisunix.unh.edu as the Incoming (POP3) server. When the client receives E-mail, all messages in your Inbox will be downloaded onto your computer. Depending on the settings you choose, copies will either remain on the server in your WebMail account or they will be completely moved to your computer.
Note: messages in folders other than your Inbox may not be retrieved with this method. You can move those messages to the WebMail Inbox and then retrieve them with the POP3 client; or you can forward them to yourself at another E-mail account.
5. Retrieve any documents saved in your CIS Unix account. Documents that appear on your Desktop or in My Documents on cluster machines are actually stored in your CIS Unix WebMail account. If you want to keep them, you must move them somewhere else before the account is deleted.
One method is to go to a cluster machine and move or copy the files to a flash drive, if you have one.
A second method involves using File Transfer Protocol (FTP) to copy the files to your hard drive:
- Windows: Open Computer (Vista) or My Computer (XP). In the address bar at the top, type ftp://username@cisunix.unh.edu , using your own UNH username, then press Enter.
- Mac: Open Finder. Use the Go menu or press Apple-K to Connect to Server. Type ftp://username@cisunix.unh.edu , using your own UNH username, then press Enter.
- Enter your username and password at the Log On screen.
- Your files and folders will appear in a their own window. Your cluster “Desktop” items appear in the Desktop folder, “My Documents” items appear in the Documents folder, and so on. You can then drag and drop to copy files between your CIS Unix account and your hard drive.
For Faculty and Staff:
The situation is similar when faculty or staff leave UNH. Staff E-mail accounts are deleted immediately after the last day of employment. Faculty E-mail accounts are deleted three to four months after the last day of employment. Faculty and staff can follow the same steps (above) to ensure that no UNH E-mail / CIS Unix WebMail is lost.
Outlook Exchange E-mail is a different system and has its own techniques for preserving E-mail. You can archive old messages or save them to personal folders on your hard drive, then use another Microsoft Outlook client to read the messages at a later time.
